Hearts in Atlantis

Drama
1 hr. 41 min.
Based on the novel by Stephen King, this drama directed by Scott Hicks (SHINE) is about a young orphaned boy (Anton Yelchin) who forms a friendship with a middle-aged boarder (Anthony Hopkins), and discovers a kind of magic that he never imagined could exist.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for violence and thematic elements.

Steven King movies have a mixed history, as far as quality goes. Usually, you end up with a stinker like The Mangler or Maximum Overdrive. However, sometimes a Steven King story makes a great film. Movies like The Shining, Stand by me and The Shawshank Redemption are all great movies based on Stephen King stories. Although Hearts in Atlantis is not the best Stephen King film, it is far from the worst. The movie does a great job of capturing the sleepy feeling of those long summers I remember way back when. The slow pacing of the movie seems to work in favor of the film, but ultimately, this film goes nowhere, and resolves nothing. What it has done, is inspire me to go read the book. The film is based on one of the four interconnected stories in the book, and I want to know what happens next. I loved the creepy undertones to this movie, and I think they could have been better developed. The movie just ends, with out really resolving anything.
Kind of like my reviews.
